Whatever Happened to…
Whatever happened to Broadway stars that people actually gave a fuck about? Broadway stars who could actually sing, and not sound like some shitty-Katy Perry-Pop Star? Broadway Stars who were legendary during their time and influenced the course of Theater as we know it?
Now, there are a select few who can still knock your socks off: Audra McDonald, Kelli O’Hara, Laura Benanti, Neil Patrick Harris is OK, Kristin Chenoweth, to name a Few. Thank God Chita Rivera, Patti Lupone and Bernadette Peters are still as good as ever!
Last but not least, there are two young men who I find charming, talented, swoon-worthy, as well candidates to be my future Husband: Jonahan Groff and Andrew Rannells.
There is a sad “sameness” to so many Artists in this current age of mediocrity, But the most frightening part is how mediocre the audiences have become and how low they have set the bar of expectation.
P.S. There’s a lot of great talent I didn’t mention, and I’m sure there is even more I am not aware of. I have no intention of arguing with any Katy Perry Fans who may be offended… You should be. Last but not least, I am a fan of Musical Theater, Straight Theater, Opera, Ballet and Film, period. Not just of “Classic” Theater or Film, but current just as much, when it’s good. What makes “Classic” Theater classic, is the Quality! The Quality of the songs, of the performers, the design… the magical culmination of the collaboration, including the audience. I have had classic experiences watching current performances. Sadly AIDS robbed us not only of great artists but also of the most engaged audience members, and we don’t have that discerning audience anymore. As Fran Lebowitz brilliantly sums it up “An audience with a high level of connoisseurship is as important to the culture as artists. That audience died in five minutes,” she says, referring to the AIDS epidemic. These days, Lebowitz says, “everything has to be broader, more blatant, more on the nose.” The problem? “Too much democracy in the culture, not enough democracy in the society.”
